Comfort Golden Age Center's mission statement is to provide opportunities and resources to those over age 55 in the areas of physical and mental health, nutrition and education in the Comfort, Texas area.
The Golden Age Center is a place for senior citizens to gather in an atmosphere that promotes and utilizes life experiences and skills. The goal of the Golden Age Center is to provide an environment that validates the changing needs and interests of the members, enhances growth and dignity and encourages connection with each other and the Comfort Community.
In 1976, the Comfort Senior Citizens Organization was born. Comfort residents came together due to efforts of an enthusiastic group of folks: Jack and Eoiline Bowie; Comfort's Poet Laureate, Ilse McElroy and humanitarians , Harris & Dede Finney. These folks wanted the best for Comfort's senior residents in the form of a Senior Center. Their focus was on community action and partnership.
The Comfort Senior Citizens group's goals were two-fold: to assist the elderly and to make Comfort an even better place to live. In six years, their efforts resulted in an all around program from fellowship to nutrition and health.
The Comfort Senior Citizens group joined the Chamber of Commerce and became a central organization as an advocate for the elderly in Comfort. They provided medical screening clinics for everyone in the community and set up a nutrition center in the Methodist Church Educational Building. They awarded honorary memberships to those individuals who went the extra mile. These were the pioneers who built the foundation upon which the Comfort Golden Age Center stands today.
The Comfort Golden Age Center is now a 501(c)(3) organization under the Comfort Golden Age Center Foundation and we serve about 100 seniors per year. Our Meals on Wheels program is sponsored by the Kronkosky Place/Rainbow Senior Center in Boerne, Texas. Hot meals are served daily at the Center and home daily deliveries of a hot lunch (Meals on Wheels) are also provided. We also partner with the Alamo Resource Conservation & Development Area Inc. Senior Assistance Program. We have many caring individuals serving on our Foundation Board of Directors, our Center Board of Directors and our Meals on Wheels and Center volunteers, all of which are very dedicated to helping our area seniors in so many ways!
